PROGRAMME

Wednesday 17 April 2019
9:00 - 19:00 EXHIBITION
THE COLOUR OF JAZZ
Tourist office Val Thorens
Free admission
20:00 CONCERT
MANU KATCHÉ, THE SCOPE
Church / Polycultural hall
De 30 à 35€
Originally classically trained (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris), musician Manu Katché was heading for the distinguished career of percussionist in a symphonic orchestra. One spin of the drumstick later and he moved away from classical music, first towards jazz, and then to pop-rock. He’s both a live and session musician, having accompanied major French performers: Goldman, Souchon, Chedid, Catherine Lara, Michel Jonasz… He owes his career explosion to Peter Gabriel, who asked him to drum on his album So. His latest project, The Scope, explores the quartet format alongside his long-standing companion on upright bass: Jérôme Regard (who has played with Michel Legrand, Jan Garbarek, Louis Winsberg…), guitarist Patrick Manouguian (who has accompanied major names in Jazz including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Minino Garay, Didier Lockwood…) and album director and pianist Elvin Galland.
23:00 AFTER : JAZZMIX
DJ HARRY COVER
Bar Le Zinc - Fahrenheit Seven
Free admission
DJ Harry Cover, a fanatical collector who has been utterly addicted to cover versions for over twelve years, neither defines himself as a “recycled music dealer” or as a real DJ (far too serious and pretentious for him!). Harry Cover offers audiences the chance to discover unusual and funny cover versions of the hits of yesterday and today.
Thursday 18 April 2019
9:00 - 19:00 EXHIBITION
THE COLOUR OF JAZZ
Tourist office Val Thorens
Free admission
Erwann Gauthier’s work is characterised by its bold graphic quality and use of colour, but more importantly, it’s a testament to his intense love of jazz, jazz musicians, and the artists that populate its legendary story. His compositions’ simplicity conveys a sense of rhythm and exacting standards. It distils the essentials, following the line of the horizon with a sailor’s watchful eye. Erwann Gauthier’s portraits are a magnificent tribute to the history of jazz, effervescent yet enigmatic, appealing both to the sense of touch and sound.
13:00 CONCERT
ELINA JONES & FRED BROUSSE
Chalet Caron
Free admission
Born in Madagascar in 1992, Elina Jones is a self-taught singer. Surrounded by soul music throughout childhood, she quickly fell under the spell of singers whose voices exude personality, the likes of Beth Hart, Etta James, Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. Her warm voice, energy and generosity never fail to leave an impression on her audience. The singer will be accompanied by Fred Brousse, a talented bluesman who’s played with Chicago’s biggest names (BB King, Maurice John Vaughn, Zora Young). On the programme: soul, blues & groove to your heart’s content!
17:00 AFTER-SKI
JEANETTE BERGER
Caron Place
Free admission
Jeanette Berger is part of the new wave of artists singing the soul music of today, influenced by irresistibly modern blues and pop. She released her first album, In My Mind, in spring 2018, offering a new take on her repertoire: an intimate, explosive and sensual three-voice arrangement, drawing on the gospel singing of her vocalists Marine Poirier and Sandra Barranco.
20:00 CONCERT
RHODA SCOTT
Church / Polycultural hall
De 30 à 35€
A long, wonderful career devoted to her instrument, the Hammond Organ, is reason enough alone not to miss the artist we call “The Barefoot Lady”. She made her debut with Count Basie, in Harlem, where she was quickly adopted by all the biggest names in music. Next, she moved to France to finish her studies at the Conservatoire with Nadia Boulanger. Rhoda is an all-round talent, so she’s every bit at ease with classical music as she is with jazz, gospel or blues. She puts everything, heart and soul, into her live performances, and inspires practically legendary devotion. For her Jazz in Val Thorens concert, she’ll be accompanied by Nicolas Peslier on the guitar and Thomas Derouineau on drums.
22:00 AFTER : JAZZMIX
PAPATEF
Bar le Wild and Savage

Papatef presents Drums + Cut up improvisation, a unique concert combining a musical DJ selection with drum and voice improvisation by Cyril Atef, a one-man band for the evening, better known for his adventures with congopunQ and Bumcello (alongside Vincent Segal), as well as his collaborations with Gotan Project Official and Matthieu Chedid – M.

Musical notes are sounds, frequencies that make our eardrum vibrate and stimulate our sense of hearing. To spark the imagination, each of these pieces plays around with the name of a note, the colour attributed to it, the type of light or character that each melody can evoke. Zacharie’s sweet voice and delicate guitar playing convey all the tender joy these songs have to offer.
21:00 AFTER : JAZZMIX
DJ FREAKISTAN
Place to be defined
Free admission
This passionate musician has been working on the Lyon scene for the last ten years as a resident DJ in a range of clubs including La Marquise, La Maison M, L’Absinthe… His nights are a mix of soulful house and furious funk, uninhibited disco and transatlantic groove, old-school hip-hop and bouncy nu beat.
22:00 AFTER : JAZZMIX
BAKOS
Place to be defined
Free admission
French live music is booming. BaKos is proof of that: a hybrid project at the intersection of dub, rock and jazz. Some might say that it isn’t jazz, others that it isn’t electro, but that’s the last thing BaKos cares about, their only goal is to make the audience feel something. The quality of the music and the way the crowds go wild speaks for itself!

When you’re born into a large gypsy family as he was in Alsace in 1966, and are also lucky enough to be a naturally gifted musician, your path is all laid out for you. As well as his rigorous training and amazing combination of strength and precision, Lagrène also has the rare grace to never forget about the basics. His fantastic sense of freedom, which he captures like no other, has led Biréli from experience to experience, encounter to encounter - everything the jazz world has come to expect from such a unique, undeniable star.

In 2015, he unveiled Voilaaa, the collective with which he plays ferocious, sweaty afro and disco sound system sets, infused with “Notting Hill” spirit.

Born and raised in Ipanema, making him a “true Carioca” (the name given to those born in the city of Rio), Jonathan Da Silva grew up at the heart of a community peopled by ex-cons-turned-artists. Against this backdrop, he strummed his first guitar chords before the age of ten, under the watchful eye of Wanda Se (his Bossa-Nova muse). A life-changing encounter with producer Bruno “Patchworks” Horvat led him straight to his first musical love: an uninhibited take on Tropicalia, in which Brazilian passion mingles with the sophistication of jazz and the sensuality of pop culture. In honour of Joao Selva, the 5-star hotel Le Pashmina’s traditional brunch will offer a taste of Brazil as interpreted by Michelin-starred chef Josselin Jeanblanc. Rate: 49€
